Speaker: Arjuna, addressing Krishna.
The shloka
Brief meaning
Arjuna says Krishna’s words seem mixed and are confusing his mind. He asks to be told, decisively, the one course by which he may reach the highest good.
In the conversation
Chapter three opens with Arjuna’s honest confusion. Krishna has praised steady understanding, yet still asks him to stand and act. Arjuna hears a contradiction and asks for one clear path. His question is the doorway to the whole chapter on karma yoga, the discipline of action.
Word by word
- With words that seem mixed,
- you seem to confuse my understanding.
- So tell me decisively the one thing
- by which I may reach the highest good.
Going deeper
Arjuna uses the word buddhi, understanding, which Krishna praised in chapter two as the discipline of a steady mind. Arjuna hears it as knowledge set apart from action, so the call to fight feels contradictory. He calls Krishna Janārdana and Keśava, names of respect, and asks for śreyas, the highest good, not mere comfort. His honest doubt is what opens the teaching of karma yoga.
Everyday reflection
You have been told to think carefully before every decision, and also to act quickly when people need you. Both sound right, and together they leave you frozen. Write the two instructions side by side. Ask what each is protecting: clarity, or care for others. Often they are not rivals. Careful thought can shape the action, and action can test the thought. Which decision in front of you needs both, rather than a choice between them?
Consider today: Ask for the clear next step, not for every answer at once.
