Speaker: Krishna, addressing Arjuna.

The shloka

तत्त्ववित्तु महाबाहो गुणकर्मविभागयोः ।
गुणा गुणेषु वर्तन्त इति मत्वा न सज्जते ॥ २८ ॥

Brief meaning

One who knows the truth of the distinction between the qualities and their actions understands that qualities move among qualities, and does not become attached.

In the conversation

Krishna describes action as carried out by the qualities of nature, while the ego claims, “I am the doer.” One who understands this distinction is not bound. Again he advises patience with those who see only part of the truth. This is a teaching about identity, not a denial of responsibility for what we do.

Word by word

तत्त्ववित् तु महाबाहो
But the knower of the truth, O mighty-armed,
गुणकर्मविभागयोः
about the distinction of qualities and their actions,
गुणाः गुणेषु वर्तन्ते इति मत्वा
understanding that qualities move among qualities,
न सज्जते
does not become attached.

Going deeper

Prakṛti is nature, and the guṇas are its three qualities. Ahaṅkāra, literally the I-maker, is the ego that claims, I am the doer. The phrase guṇā guṇeṣu vartante means the qualities move among the qualities. The kṛtsna vit, the knower of the whole, is asked to be patient with the one who sees only in part. Humility and responsibility belong together here.

Everyday reflection

After a successful week you think: I did all of this. Then you remember the sleep that restored you, the teacher who trained you, the colleague who covered for you, and circumstances you never chose. You were part of the work, and you remain responsible for your choices. Yet the sense of being the sole doer loosens. Where could seeing the larger web of causes make you both humbler and steadier?

Consider today: Watch a reaction arise and pass without following it.
