Speaker: Krishna, addressing Arjuna.
The shloka
मयि सर्वाणि कर्माणि संन्यस्याध्यात्मचेतसा ।
निराशीर्निर्ममो भूत्वा युध्यस्व विगतज्वरः ॥ ३० ॥
Brief meaning
Offering all actions to Krishna, with the mind turned to the inner self, free from expectation and the sense of “mine”, Arjuna is to fight, his fever of anguish gone.
In the conversation
In one verse Krishna gathers the chapter’s teaching: offer all actions to him, keep the mind turned towards the inner self, let go of expectation and the sense of “mine”, and act free from anguish. The command to fight belongs to Arjuna’s particular battlefield. It is not a general call to conflict.
Word by word
- मयि सर्वाणि कर्माणि संन्यस्य
- Entrusting all actions to me,
- अध्यात्मचेतसा
- with your mind on the inner self,
- निराशीः निर्ममः भूत्वा
- free from expectation and from the sense of mine,
- युध्यस्व विगतज्वरः
- fight, with your fever of anguish gone.
Going deeper
Mayi sarvāṇi karmāṇi sannyasya means placing all actions in me, entrusting them to Krishna. Adhyātma cetasā means with the mind turned to the inner self. Nirāśīḥ is free from expectation, and nirmamaḥ free from the sense of mine. Vigata jvaraḥ, the fever gone, describes inner agitation calming down. This single verse gathers the whole teaching of the chapter into one practice.
Everyday reflection
A difficult task waits for you: an exam, a hard conversation, a long shift. Anxiety rises at the thought of how it will go. Begin by offering it, in your own words, to God or to a purpose larger than yourself. Then do the next step fully, without rehearsing every outcome. The work still needs effort; only the fever is set down. What would it be like to offer today’s hardest task before starting it?
Consider today: Offer your work in remembrance, then let the anxiety go.
