Speaker: Krishna, addressing Arjuna.

The shloka

यज्ञार्थात्कर्मणोऽन्यत्र लोकोऽयं कर्मबन्धनः ।
तदर्थं कर्म कौन्तेय मुक्तसङ्गः समाचर ॥ ९ ॥

Brief meaning

Action done as yajña, as an offering, does not bind; other action binds the world. So Arjuna is to act for that purpose, free from attachment.

In the conversation

This verse introduces yajña, sacred offering, as the key to action that does not bind. In its setting, yajña is worship: action offered to the divine and to the order that sustains life. It should not be reduced to efficiency or productivity. Action done for that purpose, without attachment, frees rather than binds.

Word by word

यज्ञार्थात् कर्मणः अन्यत्र
Apart from action done for the sake of yajña,
लोकः अयम् कर्मबन्धनः
this world is bound by action.
तदर्थम् कर्म कौन्तेय
For that purpose, O son of Kuntī,
मुक्तसङ्गः समाचर
free from attachment, perform your action.

Going deeper

Yajña comes from the root yaj, to worship or to offer. Many traditional commentators read it here as worship of the divine, and some identify yajña with Viṣṇu himself. Karma bandhana means the bondage of action, and mukta saṅga means free from attachment. Krishna calls Arjuna Kaunteya, son of Kuntī, a tender reminder of who he is. The same deed binds or frees, depending on whether it is offered.

Everyday reflection

Before you begin cooking a family meal, pause and offer it silently: to God, to those who will eat it, to the effort of the farmers who grew it. The task is the same, yet its centre has moved. You are less concerned with praise for the meal and more attentive to care in making it. That is a small doorway into the teaching, not the whole of it. What work today could you begin as an offering?

Consider today: Before a task, offer it silently to something larger than yourself.
