Context, Sanskrit and lesson transcript

The king has asked what happened. Sanjaya now begins his account of the battlefield.

सञ्जय उवाच।
दृष्ट्वा तु पाण्डवानीकं व्यूढं दुर्योधनस्तदा।
आचार्यमुपसङ्गम्य राजा वचनमब्रवीत्॥२॥

Brief meaning, in our own words. After seeing the Pandava army drawn up for battle, Duryodhana goes to his teacher and begins to speak.

This verse changes the narrator. Sanjaya tells Dhritarashtra about Duryodhana; the words that follow belong to Duryodhana. Keeping those voices distinct helps us follow the story.

Here is our everyday reflection. When you hear an account of a disagreement, notice who witnessed it and whose words are being reported. Today, listen to one account without immediately adding your own conclusion.
