Speaker: Krishna, addressing Arjuna.
The shloka
सुखदुःखे समे कृत्वा लाभालाभौ जयाजयौ ।
ततो युद्धाय युज्यस्व नैवं पापमवाप्स्यसि ॥ ३८ ॥
Brief meaning
Arjuna is urged to act with evenness toward pleasure and pain, gain and loss, victory and defeat, rather than allowing those pairs to rule him.
In the conversation
Krishna first names the social consequences Arjuna fears, then moves toward evenness in gain and loss, pleasure and pain, victory and defeat. The sequence matters. The ending does not reduce action to protecting reputation; it asks for steadiness amid outcomes while Arjuna fulfils his particular duty.
Everyday reflection
Imagine needing to give an honest report that may disappoint your team. You could chase approval by softening the facts, or try to look courageous by speaking harshly. Neither approach gives the truth careful attention. Prepare accurate information, acknowledge uncertainty and speak respectfully. You cannot guarantee that everyone will praise the report. You can still examine the quality of your work. What would a responsible action look like if applause and criticism were both possible afterward?
Consider today: Review an outcome without losing care for the people involved.
