Speaker: Krishna, addressing Arjuna.

The shloka

Brief meaning

Such a person does not cling to favourable events or react with hatred to unfavourable ones; their understanding remains established.

In the conversation

The tortoise image describes withdrawing the senses, while the following verse warns that outward abstinence may leave inward longing untouched. The higher vision is essential to the spiritual account. Simply removing an object is not always the same as changing the relationship with it.

Everyday reflection

You put your phone in another room to concentrate. For several minutes, your attention still reaches for it. The physical boundary helps, but the restless expectation is still present. Notice what you are seeking: novelty, reassurance or escape from a difficult task. Return gently to the chosen work and give the boundary a positive purpose. What worthwhile attention are you making room for, rather than merely counting the minutes until you can reach for the phone again?

Consider today: Respond to one piece of news with proportion and care.
