Speaker: Krishna, addressing Arjuna.
The shloka
न कर्मणामनारम्भान्नैष्कर्म्यं पुरुषोऽश्नुते ।
न च संन्यसनादेव सिद्धिं समधिगच्छति ॥ ४ ॥
Brief meaning
Freedom from the bonds of action is not reached simply by not beginning work, and perfection does not come from outward renunciation alone.
In the conversation
Krishna answers that two disciplines were taught long ago, one centred on knowledge and one on action. He then removes a misunderstanding: freedom does not come from simply stopping work. Every embodied being acts, moved by nature, even when sitting still. The question is not whether we act, but how.
Word by word
- न कर्मणाम् अनारम्भात्
- Not by refraining from actions
- नैष्कर्म्यम् पुरुषः अश्नुते
- does a person reach freedom from action,
- न च संन्यसनात् एव
- nor by renunciation alone
- सिद्धिम् समधिगच्छति
- does one attain perfection.
Going deeper
Krishna names two niṣṭhās, two settled ways of life: jñāna yoga, the path of knowledge, and karma yoga, the path of action. The key word is naiṣkarmya, freedom from the binding power of action. It does not mean doing nothing. The guṇas, the three qualities of nature called sattva, rajas and tamas, keep every embodied being in motion. So the real question is the spirit in which we act.
Everyday reflection
You decide to avoid a difficult family discussion by saying nothing. Silence feels like not acting. Yet silence also has effects: others draw conclusions, decisions are made without you, and the tension remains. Recognising that you are already acting can change the question. Instead of asking whether to get involved, ask what response would be most honest and kind. What are you already doing, even by staying still?
Consider today: Begin one task you have been postponing until you feel ready.
