Speaker: Krishna, addressing Arjuna.
The shloka
न हि कश्चित्क्षणमपि जातु तिष्ठत्यकर्मकृत् ।
कार्यते ह्यवशः कर्म सर्वः प्रकृतिजैर्गुणैः ॥ ५ ॥
Brief meaning
No one can remain without acting, even for a moment. Every being is moved to act by the qualities that arise from nature.
In the conversation
Krishna answers that two disciplines were taught long ago, one centred on knowledge and one on action. He then removes a misunderstanding: freedom does not come from simply stopping work. Every embodied being acts, moved by nature, even when sitting still. The question is not whether we act, but how.
Word by word
- न हि कश्चित् क्षणम् अपि
- For no one, not even for a moment,
- जातु तिष्ठति अकर्मकृत्
- ever remains without acting.
- कार्यते हि अवशः कर्म सर्वः
- Everyone is made to act, helplessly,
- प्रकृतिजैः गुणैः
- by the qualities born of nature.
Going deeper
Krishna names two niṣṭhās, two settled ways of life: jñāna yoga, the path of knowledge, and karma yoga, the path of action. The key word is naiṣkarmya, freedom from the binding power of action. It does not mean doing nothing. The guṇas, the three qualities of nature called sattva, rajas and tamas, keep every embodied being in motion. So the real question is the spirit in which we act.
Everyday reflection
You decide to avoid a difficult family discussion by saying nothing. Silence feels like not acting. Yet silence also has effects: others draw conclusions, decisions are made without you, and the tension remains. Recognising that you are already acting can change the question. Instead of asking whether to get involved, ask what response would be most honest and kind. What are you already doing, even by staying still?
Consider today: Notice how much of today you spend acting without choosing.
