Speaker: Krishna, addressing Arjuna.

The shloka

Brief meaning

The senses are said to be higher than the body, the mind higher than the senses, understanding higher than the mind, and higher than understanding is the self.

In the conversation

Krishna advises beginning with the senses, steadying them early, before desire grows strong. Then he lays out an ascending order: senses, mind, understanding, and beyond them all, the self. Practice starts with what is closest, while remembering what is highest.

Word by word

The senses, they say, are higher than the body;
higher than the senses is the mind;
higher than the mind is the understanding;
and what is beyond the understanding, that is the self.

Going deeper

Krishna calls Arjuna Bharatarṣabha, best of the Bharatas. Jñāna is knowledge and vijñāna is realised understanding, knowledge that has become one’s own. The ladder of indriya, the senses, manas, the mind, buddhi, the understanding, and ātman, the self, echoes a similar teaching in the Kaṭha Upaniṣad. We begin with what is nearest, the senses, while keeping sight of what is highest.

Everyday reflection

When you notice the pull of a habit, act early: close the app, leave the snack in the cupboard, step outside for air. That is work at the level of the senses. Then, in a quiet moment, ask who is noticing all this. The question points beyond habits towards the self that the chapter has been describing. Where could one early, small choice today make the larger practice easier?

Consider today: Pause and notice what is aware of your thoughts.
