Speaker: Krishna, addressing Arjuna.

The shloka

एवं बुद्धेः परं बुद्ध्वा संस्तभ्यात्मानमात्मना ।
जहि शत्रुं महाबाहो कामरूपं दुरासदम् ॥ ४३ ॥

Brief meaning

Knowing what is beyond understanding, and steadying the self by the self, Arjuna is to overcome this enemy in the form of desire, so hard to subdue.

In the conversation

The chapter closes with encouragement. Knowing the self as higher than the intellect, Arjuna is to steady himself from within and overcome desire, an enemy hard to subdue. Chapter three ends not with a final victory, but with a direction for practice.

Word by word

एवम् बुद्धेः परम् बुद्ध्वा
Thus knowing what is beyond the understanding,
संस्तभ्य आत्मानम् आत्मना
steadying the self by the self,
जहि शत्रुम् महाबाहो
slay the enemy, O mighty-armed,
कामरूपम् दुरासदम्
in the form of desire, so hard to overcome.

Going deeper

Saṃstabhya means making firm, steadying. Ātmānam ātmanā, the self by the self, means steadying the mind through the higher self within. Mahābāho, mighty-armed, reminds Arjuna of his strength. Kāma rūpam means in the form of desire, and durāsadam means hard to approach, hard to overcome. The chapter is named karma yoga, the yoga of action, and it ends with a call to inner mastery.

Everyday reflection

Mastery rarely arrives in one heroic moment. It grows through many small returns: choosing patience once more, finishing the task once more, letting a craving pass once more. Remember the strength you have, beyond moods and impulses, and lean on it gently and firmly. What single desire will you choose to master today, not with harshness but with steady resolve?

Consider today: Choose one desire to master today, gently and firmly.
