Speaker: Krishna, addressing Arjuna.

The shloka

दूरेण ह्यवरं कर्म बुद्धियोगाद्धनञ्जय ।
बुद्धौ शरणमन्विच्छ कृपणाः फलहेतवः ॥ ४९ ॥

Brief meaning

Reward-driven action is contrasted with action guided by understanding. Arjuna is urged to seek refuge in that understanding rather than making fruits his aim.

In the conversation

Krishna contrasts a mind fixed on rewards with disciplined understanding, and calls yoga skill in action. That phrase should not be reduced to efficiency at any cost. Its setting concerns freedom from binding karmic results, a deeper question than getting more tasks done in less time.

Everyday reflection

A manager can finish a difficult conversation quickly by refusing questions. But speed alone does not make the conversation skilful. Clear facts, a fair opportunity to respond and a thoughtful next step may require more care. Before acting, ask what kind of attention the situation deserves. Afterward, examine whether your method was honest and proportionate. Skill includes knowing when to slow down, when to speak plainly and when your own desire to win is distorting the task.

Consider today: Ask whether the motive is service, approval, or grasping.
