Speaker: Sanjaya, reporting to Dhritarashtra

Teaching film · Sanskrit · Everyday reflection

Our original brief meaning and reflection accompany the Sanskrit below.

Context, Sanskrit and lesson transcript

Sanjaya continues his account. After Bhishma sounds his conch, many instruments join the gathering.

ततः शङ्खाश्च भेर्यश्च पणवानकगोमुखाः।
सहसैवाभ्यहन्यन्त स शब्दस्तुमुलोऽभवत्॥१३॥

Brief meaning, in our own words. Conches and other wind and percussion instruments sound together, suddenly creating a great uproar.

The verse describes the sound before battle. The Sanskrit names several instruments; their exact construction is not specified here.

Here is our everyday reflection. When many voices compete for your attention, pause before responding. Listen for what needs care, rather than following whichever sound is loudest.
